Port Ellen (silent) - 16th Release - 1978 37 year old Whisky 70CL
LP7429-od
$5437.26 price per bottle

The 16th release under the Annual Diageo release programme of 2016 and at 37 years old, the oldest yet and if rumours are to be believed likely to be even more limited and more expensive next year? Only 2940 bottles released and aged in a combination of refill American hogsheads and refill European oak butts and bottled at 55. 2%ABV Nose: The smell of an Islay distillery tour in a bottle (only if you have visited one of the 8 on the island will this make sense!) cured meats eaten by a coastal peat fire, old leather, smoked vanilla fudge, sooty root vegetables, earthy beetroot, green chilli in lime curd. Palate: Prickly pears over sooty white ash smoke, green peppers, anise, clove, lime pickle, smoked seafood with light soy sauce and creamy wasabi with vanilla. Finish: Green fruit and peppery root vegetables, sooty lime, minty smoke and the whiff of wet earth or grass after a summer shower of rain. Complex nose that will transport you to a musty old dunnage warehouse on Islay and if you ever wondered what all the fuss is about with this legendary closed and long silent distillery, well the evidence is right here. The oldest ever official release to date and one of the most satisfying yet.
