Hakushu is the second distillery that Suntory opened in 1973 after Yamazaki way back in 1923 and was at one point in the 1980's the largest distillery in the world in terms of volume of production. Nose: Spiced apricot, musky peach, nectarine, gentle notes of white pepper and some sooty smoke, salted white chocolate. Palate: Green apple, menthol, white pepper, sweet chilli flakes, gooseberry, lemon and lime, subtle smoke. Finish: Smoked apricot, spiced apple, white pepper, ginger barley sugar, mint leaf. Lovely mix of subtle smoke and refreshing fruit with a peppery and clean finish from one of my favourite Japanese distilleries. Featured in the 1001 whiskies you must try before you die book.
