Our story started in one of England’s last wild sanctuaries in the remote moors of Northumberland, the whipping winds amongst the age of juniper bushes at Hepple, and our pursuit of a gin to make the perfect dry martini. The only way to capture the wild heart of this juniper was to completely rethink how the gin was made. Thus our Triple Technique was born. Producer Our story began at our home on the Hepple Estate, nestled in the untouched Northumberland Moors and one of Britain’s last wild sanctuaries. With ancient woodland, hill farms and heather moorland, the Hepple Estate stretches from the highest point of the Simonside range, across peat bogs undulating with vivid green mosses, past wind-ground rocks that jut from seas of heather and blaeberry, past bog myrtle and stands of venerable juniper and birch to the low sheep pastures and haughs of the river Coquet. A quiet place untouched by modern farming and mass tourism, it is home to families who have lived alongside one another for generations. Their old cottages, fortified Bastle houses and peel towers which pepper the valley have witnessed centuries of violent incursions by Scottish cattle rustlers who used to travel across the borders to pillage the land. As the violence ebbed in the eighteenth century the area remained an ungovernable, wild area, where illicit stills flourished, fed by the quantity of fresh spring water and local barley, safeguarded by their seclusion from the Excise Man. So it seems fitting that our distillery and laboratory emerged from the Hepple Coach house in these clean bright hills. Part of the estate is a Special Conservation Area - one of the few such designations in the country- and is a sanctuary for many rare animals including curlews (our Moorlanders icon), red squirrels, ringed ouzels, lapwings, hen harriers and peregrine falcons. As a result Co-Founder Walter, who calls Hepple Home with his wife Lucy, work closely with the National Parks authority and other wildlife organisations to support and protect the biodiversity of the land.
