A fairly recent history, but one which has certainly brought its main character, Dorino Livon, a long way, to make him one of the best established and best known wine growers in Friuli. A history, however, which has its origins in a family passion and tradition: the love for his homeland, Friuli, and especially for that stretch of land which is the last bastion of Italy toward eastern Europe: the Collio and the eastern hills of Friuli. In 1964 Dorino Livon bought his first vineyard on the hills of the Collio and gradually added more to that. The Livon farm grew from year to year. At the same time the plan to build his own wine-making cellar developed, perfectly equipped and with the most advanced technological systems. The decision to diversify the production of the wines which, keeping their high quality, were able to develop two different strategic concepts, dates back to the beginning of the 1980s, after Dorino’s two sons Valneo and Tonino joined the firm. The Cru wines with a limited production, obtained from vineyards particularly suitable for work of both the agricultural and the enological type, extremely selected, and the classic wines destined to develop in an important way, even in quantity, in the medium/high market range. The organizational and production principles at the basis of the results obtained are: the reduction of quantity obtained per hectare, shorter pruning, closer planting of the already existing vineyards, the planting of new vineyards with a large number of vines per hectare, and the creation of two separate cellars. The ”Masarotte” cellar is used as the wine making centre for all the Cru production and for maturing the white wines from the same line in barriques; the ”Venco” cellar is used for the maturing all the red wines, both in barriques and in barrels. The decade which followed was consequently characterized by consolidation of what had been programmed before, and the affirmation of Valneo and Tonino as the natural heirs of their father. The subsequent strategic turning point in the firm happened during the course of the five years from 1992 to 1997 when, realizing they had to stay competitive in a rapidly changing market, the Livon family decided to buy three farms: two of these, Villa Chiopris and Tenuta Roncaldo, are in Friuli, whereas the third, Borgo Salcetino, is in Tuscany, in the Chianti Classico area. In 2001the Livon family completed their range of production by buying the Fattoria Col santo in the municipality of Bevagna (Perugia) in the Montefalco DOCG area. In 2008, after a long period of restoration, the old Villa Chiopris Inn regained its former splendor. It offers a B&B service, events and wine tastings to its clients, with pleasant moments of relaxation among the vineyards and a centuries-old park with a swimming pool from where you can smell the scent of lavender. A farm with a global strategy, extremely diversified, with five diverse brands and over 200 hectares of vines: Livon, Tenuta Roncaldo and Villa Chiopris in Friuli, Borgo Salcetino in Tuscany and Fattoria Col santo in Umbria, with products destined to cover, in their different positions, different areas of the market.
